Cold calling still works for selling websites to local businesses, because owners pick up the phone. The trick is to be short, specific and human. Here is a cold calling script for web design clients you can adapt in five minutes.
Before you dial
- Look at their current website (or notice they have none).
- Read two or three of their Google reviews.
- Have one specific thing to say: “your site doesn't open on phones”, “you have no website on Google”.
The opener (10 seconds)
“Hi, is this Mike? Mike, it's Sam from Bright Web. I'll be quick, I know you're busy. I was looking at roofers in Tampa and found your business on Google, you have amazing reviews.”
The reason for the call (20 seconds)
“The reason I'm calling: when I opened your website on my phone, the text was tiny and there's no button to call you. People searching for a roofer on their phone will probably call the next one. I actually made a quick preview of how your site could look. Can I send it to you?”
Handling the common objections
- “We get enough work.” “That's great, the reviews show it. The site is more about the bigger jobs: people who compare three roofers online first.”
- “I already have a guy.” “Perfect, no problem at all. Can I still send the preview? If it's useful, you can show it to him.”
- “How much?” “It depends on what you need, most roofers I work with are between X and Y. Let me send the preview first, so you can see if it's even worth talking.”
- “Send me an email.” “Will do. What's the best email for you? I'll send it in the next ten minutes.”
Book the next step
Your goal is not to sell the website on the first call. It is to send the preview and book a ten-minute follow-up to look at it together.

Follow up the same day
Send the preview within minutes, while you are still fresh in their mind, then call back at the time you agreed. Read cold email follow-up for web designers.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a cold call to a business owner be?
Aim for under two minutes. The goal is to earn the right to send something and to book a short follow-up, not to close on the first call.
Should I read a script word for word?
No. Learn the structure (opener, reason, question, next step) and say it in your own words. Owners hang up on anything that sounds read.
