Phone Line Checker: How to Check if a Business Phone Line Is Active

Nothing slows a call session down like dead numbers. A phone line checker tells you, before you dial, which numbers are live and which are not, and what kind of line each one is.

What a phone line checker can tell you

• Valid / invalid: is the number assigned to a line at all?
• Line type: mobile, landline, VoIP or toll-free.
• Carrier: who runs the line today (numbers move between carriers).
• Clean format: the number in international format, ready for your dialer.

It cannot tell you if someone will answer, or if the business is open today. For that, check the business's Google listing for opening hours and recent reviews.

Signs a line is no longer used

• The checker says the number is invalid or unassigned.
• The carrier changed recently and the number now belongs to a mobile network, not the business's phone system.
• The business's Google listing shows a different number than its website.
• Recent reviews mention "nobody answers" or "number doesn't work".

How to clean a lead list with a phone line checker

1. Remove duplicates and numbers in the wrong format.
2. Check every number you have not checked before.
3. Delete or fix invalid numbers: look for the right one on the Google listing or Facebook page.
4. Tag mobiles, landlines and VoIP so you can plan your call times.
5. Re-check numbers older than a few months before a new campaign.

What a check costs

Each lookup asks the phone network, so it has a small cost. Check numbers right before you need them instead of checking a whole database you may never call.
